Thursday kickaround: Whitecaps coach, Petke’s retirement, SuperLiga, WPS playoff race, college oddity, TV listings
*As expected, the Vancouver Whitecaps will retain Teitur Thordarson as head coach when they enter MLS next season. *Following the departure of Ben Olsen last fall and Clint Mathis this summer, MLS will lose another colorful character at the end of the season with the retirement of defender Mike Petke, who helped D.C. United win MLS Cup in 2004 and spent the beginning and end of his 13-year career in New York. Remember this Petke moment? *Mexican club Morelia defeated the New England Revolution, 2-1, in the final of the SuperLiga. And when I say final, I mean both the championship game and hopefully the last version of this event ever. *The Washington Freedom received help in its WPS playoff push when Sky Blue conceded a late equalizer for a 1-1 draw with first-place Gold Pride. With two matches remaining for each club in the chase for the last postseason

D.C. United falls to Columbus Crew, 2-1, in overtime in U.S. Open Cup semifinals
D.C. United lost again. It's what they do in 2010. This one was crushing because of the manner in which it unfolded and because it extinguished the club's final hope of salvaging an otherwise miserable season. Interim coach Ben Olsen's postgame theme: "We can't reward ourselves," referring to the club's failure to finish a good performance before conceding a late equalizer and then a goal in extra time of the U.S. Open Cup semifinal. He repeated it several times. Club president Kevin Payne's postgame theme: "%#@&%$#!," referring to referee Chris Penso for red-carding Pablo Hernandez early in the second half, and to the U.S. Soccer Federation for assigning a secondary official to a consequential match while MLS veteran Jair Marrufo worked a friendly between the Philadelphia Union and Chivas Guadalajara two hours away at PPL Park. In MLS, Penso has served as the fourth official in several matches. United remembers

Open Cup matchnight: D.C. United vs. Crew
Before we turn our attention to D.C. United's biggest match of this difficult year, a U.S. Open Cup semifinal against the Columbus Crew at RFK Stadium, let's pick up where we left off during this morning's online chat concerning the state and direction of the local club. Diehard supporters and casual fans alike have questions about the roster, about the front office, about the stadium situation. I tried to address several of these issues, but in a rapid-fire format with independent insight that only goes so deep, it's a challenge to explain everything. Fortunately for supporters, you will have a chance to go straight to the boss, club president Kevin Payne. Current season ticket holders and those who have made commitments for 2011 will have access to Q&A sessions with Payne at RFK's Capitol View Club before home matches this Saturday, and again on Sept. 25, Oct. 9 and Oct.
