Here’s a picture of the press conference introducing John Riggins‘ arrival in the nation’s capital on June 10, 1976. It’s hard to believe that 37 years have went by and press conference’s have changed so much over the years, but it’s always good to look back. Head coach George Allen is obviously very pleased to announce the signing of his new running back!
Riggins would go on to lead the Washington Redskins to a Super Bowl championship and become the franchise’s all-time leading rusher with 7,472 yards and scored 79 TDs along the way. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame in 1992.
I’m also posting a video of highlights from Riggins’ Redskins career that I found on YouTube. It’s about 8 minutes long, but well worth your time because it has some great footage including a picture of an impaired Riggo at the famous Washington Press Club’s annual salute to Congress dinner where he passed out and snored through Vice President George Bush’s hour-long speech. That’s also the dinner where he said “Come on Sandy, baby, loosen up, You’re too tight” to Supreme court judge Sandra Day O’Connor.
