The Washington Redskins will take the field for the first time in 2013 in tomorrow night’s pre-season opener against the Tennessee Titans and I can’t wait! I know it’s only the preseason and we won’t be seeing RG3 on the field, but I’m still excited to see our young draft picks in action.
Another player I’m looking forward to watching is CB Chase Minnifield who is finally healthy and ready to roll.
Before I get to far ahead I want to look back on our great 2012 season that saw the team win the NFC East division for the first time since 1999! We finally have a young franchise QB with RG3 and a solid backup at the position as well in Kirk Cousins. It’s funny to think of how many years the team tried to find a topnotch signal caller and came up empty, but then we land two guys in the SAME draft! Unbelievable!
We also found a young workhorse RB in Alfred Morris and a potential game changing WR with Pierre Garcon who came up big down the stretch during the team’s seven game winning streak. The Redskins went 9-1 when Garcon played and that’s not just a coincidence my friends. He could form a great tag-team with RG3 for years to come!
One very important thing happened last season that doesn’t get talked about very much, the signing of kicker Kai Forbath. The kid was brilliant after coming on board for the ineffective Billy Cundiff by setting an NFL record for most consecutive made kicks to start a career with 17. The kicking game is an area we’ve struggled in for years and the team has went through a mind-boggling 19 kickers since 1994, but I think this kid’s a keeper.
The kicking game is very important, but it often gets overlooked because it’s not a glamour position. I’m really hoping we’ve found our answer at the kicker position for years to come because it can be the difference in winning or losing two to three games per year. Those couple of wins can be the deciding factor in whether or not a team gets into the playoffs.
The defense got off to a ….slow start last year, but they did step it up after the bye week and helped engineer that incredible run to the division title. I know LB London Fletcher’s almost as old as dirt, but he led that unit like a player half his age during that streak and made several big plays.
I think we’ve got a pretty solid team returning and coach Mike Shanahan has done a good job in changing the culture of team going into his fourth season at the wheel. My only hope during the preseason is that we come away without any major injuries because that can derail a season before it starts.
