Adrian Gonzalez powered Mexico to a convincing 5-2 win over Team USA last night. Gonzalez drove in three runs off knuckleballer R.A. Dickey who didn’t have his best stuff and allowed four runs in four innings of work.
Team USA (0-1) never recovered after Dickey’s early struggles, its stacked lineup unable to get much of anything going against Mexico’s pitchers.
The outcome sets up a crucial doubleheader on Saturday for the two teams at Chase Field. Mexico plays Canada at 2:30 p.m. ET and the U.S. faces a must-win game against 2-0 Italy at 9 p.m.
If Mexico, which has played well in its two games outside of a bad ninth inning Thursday, can beat Canada on Saturday afternoon, then Team USA takes the field for its second game facing elimination against Italy, the surprise of Pool D with two wins already in its back pocket.
Ryan Vogelsong is slated to take the mound for Team USA in the second game, but it’s the offense that needs to get ready to go.
