Chiefs Land QB Alex Smith

Alex Smith

The Kansas City Chiefs have acquired QB Alex Smith from the San Fransisco 49ers for a second round draft pick in 2013 and a conditional pick in 2014. Smith becomes the first QB in the new Andy Reid era. This deal won’t become official until the new league year starts on March 12.

Incumbent QB Matt Cassel is expected to be released in the coming days. Cassel was brought in to be the answer at QB in 2009, but things never panned out. He did help the team win the AFC West Division in 2010, but injuries and inconsistent play will be what people will remember most about his time in Kansas City.

Head coach Andy Reid now has his QB and holds the #1 overall pick in the upcoming 2013 NFL Draft. Will the team use the pick on OT Luke Joeckel or trade down and load up with more picks? If it was up to me I’d select Joeckel and be very happy doing it. The Chiefs have more talent than their 2-14 record from last season shows and could be a competitive team in 2013.
