A very disturbing article came out the day after the New York Giants beat the San Fransisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game. The article claims that Giants players targeted 49ers player Kyle Williams who has a history of concussions. I thought the NFL and teams were supposed to protect guys from concussions, not target them and try your best to inflict another one?
Giants players were openly talking about this in their locker room after the game and their quotes are in the article. I’m sure the league office can’t be smiling about this with former players already in litigation over the leagues failure to ensure player safety regarding concussions.
I know football is a violent game and players get hurt, but targeting someone in this way is terribly wrong in my opinion. A broken finger will heal, but with concussions it’s a whole different ballgame.
Another question I have is what about the 49ers team doctors? Don’t they have someone on staff in charge of watching their players for signs of trouble, especially a player who has a medical history of multiple concussions?
The article points out a couple of instances where Williams displayed signs of another concussion during the game, but was allowed to play on. What’s really being done to protect players?
