It wasn’t pretty, but the George Mason Patriots got a 61-57 win over the Villanova Wildcats in their NCAA Tournament matchup. The Patriots were trailing most of the game and then provided us with another memorable March Madness finish to snatch the win and advance to the next round and a date with #1 seed Ohio State.
Coach Larranaga kept his team calm and poised down the stretch and Luke Hancock drilled a huge 3 pointer to give the Patriots a 59-57 lead with 19 seconds left. That was a clutch shot and no doubt the biggest of his life. The Patriots were down 6 points with 1:54 remaining and just refused to give in and kept plugging away. Villanova also had some missed foul shots down the stretch that helped in their demise.
This was the Patriots second win in over a Big East team in school history. Their other win also came in the NCAA Tournament over UConn during the 2006 run to the Final Four.
