Being a rookie, I am fully enjoying not only my hometown city of San Antonio, but also all of the cities that we visit on the road. So far we have been to Tulsa, Connecticut, Atlanta, Seattle, and I just landed in LA. Each place has had hidden and well known public gems in the city that make them unique. I decided to write about all of the cities and what I was able to enjoy after our game.
Tulsa will always have a special feeling for me. You see, I am from California, always lived in California, and am pretty much the definition of a California girl. I have dealt with beautiful sunshine days, El Nino and earthquakes. Nothing from California would prepare me for Tulsa however. I was in my room watching TV and it had been very windy outside all day. I heard sirens start to go off. I had no idea what was going on until the sirens, I realized, were a tornado warning. I instantly ran to the window and people were still walking outside! (Must be an everyday thing for them) I started to think of what happens if this tornado actually touches down? The only thing that came to mind was the movie "Twister." I figured that tips from that movie would be my best chance of survival if it did actually touch down. I found out when my roommate returned that our hotel did have a basement, but if we couldn’t make it down to there in time then the bathtub was our best bet for safety. Tulsa forced me to learn one more thing about the power of Mother Nature, and I can say now that I may have a better chance at living through a tornado.
Connecticut was a very lively trip. The Mohegan Sun Casino was filled with entertainment, gambling, people, food, and of course the arena. I never would have thought that so much could fit into one building! I liked being able just go down the elevator and have multiple places to eat and be entertained. One of my teammates met a man who gave us four tickets to the show after our game. It was crazy that the gym could be transformed into a stage so quickly! Conan O’Brian was the entertainer and the show was pretty good. Our team fell in love with the guy who performed at intermission. He was hysterical. Every joke he said was right on point and we were dying laughing. It was a quality entertaining center in Connecticut with a ton of places to eat and stuff to do after our game.
Atlanta was a very cool city to visit as well. I went and visited Centennial Park. This park is in place to remind people of the Atlanta Olympics, the 100th year of the Olympics. I got to see a musical water show put on with the fountains and after the show, I watched kids run and play in all the water. At the park there was also a place with an overhang of all the participating countries’ flags of that Olympics. This was very cool to see and I tried my hardest to pick out what flags I knew and could recognize. I for sure need to work on this. I really enjoyed being able to look back into history a bit and see the names of those athletes that have won gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Atlanta Olympics. Throughout the park there were also statues representing different things and people everywhere. I just received a very positive vibe from this park and thought it was very cool.
We have been to Seattle twice now, and I still have been unsuccessful at finding a Starbucks. Just kidding! I don’t think you can walk more than 400 feet without passing or seeing one. This is a lovely thing for a girl in love with her chai tea. I made myself and a couple of my friends reservations for dinner at the top of the Space Needle for after our game. Dang, it’s high up! It was very cool to be able to slowly spin and see the whole city while eating dinner. I was a little shaky at first but after sitting for awhile and having some food in me I really started to enjoy being able to see so much and all the city lights. Of course, my friends are huge dorks and made me order the lunar sundae (complete with a dry ice effect) to top off the night. It was well worth the embarrassment that the only other person who ordered it all night was the ten year old at the table next to us. I also went down and visited Pike’s Market. This was well worth the walk and nice to see that old style history as well. On our way out of Seattle, the Flag of Honor was brought in to the airport. This is the flag that was flown at Ground Zero and honors the fallen police and firefighters. It was a big production in the airport for this flag to come off the plane and stay in Seattle for a bit.
We just landed in LA and I am excited to see what this city has to offer. I have been here many times, but have not experienced it for myself. Well see what LA has to offer!
Let’s Go Stars,
Jayne
